One of the great things about Apple’s iCloud is that it allows you to take your personal and private information with you wherever you go, regardless of what type of device you’re using. If the only Apple device you own is an iPhone, for example, you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that all of your contacts are safely stored in the iCloud service. If anything should ever happen to your device, you would only need to log into the iCloud on your replacement iPhone and everything would appear right back where it always was. If you own multiple Apple devices like an iPhone and a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, however, the fun can really begin. If you configure each of your two devices properly, they will work together and share information automatically. If you added a new contact entry on your MacBook Pro, for example, it would automatically be pushed to your iPhone and would instantly be available for you to use.
Step 1
Log into your Apple ID on both your MacBook and on your Apple iPhone. Doing so is required not only to be able to use the iCloud service on both devices, but also to be able to share purchases made in the various iTunes digital media stores. If you purchase a high definition copy of a feature film on your iPhone, for example, the only way you would be able to watch that same film on your MacBook is if you were logged into the same Apple ID. You can log into an Apple ID from the “Settings” application on your iPhone and from the “System Preferences” application on your MacBook.
Step 2
Click the “Apple” logo button in the top left corner of your MacBook and navigate to the option labeled “System Preferences.” Doing so will open a new window on screen that is very similar in concept to the “Control Panel” on a Windows desktop or laptop computer. Once opened, click the blue icon labeled “iCloud” in the third section of options in the window on the screen. The “iCloud” option is located just below the one labeled “Displays” and just to the left of the one labeled “Internet Accounts.”
Step 3
Go through the window on the screen and configure which aspects of your computer you want to use with your iCloud account. If you wanted to sync all of your calendar entries or photos to the cloud, for example, you would select the options on the screen labeled “Calendar” and “Photos.” You can perform the same functions with a large number of other options including mail information, contact information, reminder information, notes information, Safari information, keychain information and more. Once you’re finished, tap the “Close” button to close out of the “System Preferences” window and return to your desktop.
Step 4
Go to your Apple iPhone and open the “Settings” application. Scroll through the window on the screen until you see the option labeled “iCloud.” Select it one time to continue.
Step 5
Scroll through the options on the screen and select the ones that you want to be able to use in conjunction with your MacBook. If you synced all of your contact information to the iCloud service on your MacBook, for example, you’ll want to make sure that you select the same option on your iPhone. Doing so will allow changes made on one device to be automatically reflected on another. Syncing Safari on both devices, for example, will allow a bookmark created on one device to automatically appear on another.
